When a WISP Should Upgrade From 1G to 10G
Capacity planning signals, oversubscription math and the business case for a 10G backhaul circuit.
A 1 Gbps backhaul circuit can serve more subscribers than many WISPs expect, but there comes a point where staying on 1 Gbps creates congestion, limits plan speeds, and increases outage risk. Upgrading to 10 Gbps is not just about bandwidth—it is about headroom, subscriber experience, and future-proofing.
Signals it is time to upgrade
- Sustained utilization above 70% during peak hours. Once you are consistently above 70%, bursts will cause buffering and latency spikes.
- You want to sell plans above ~200 Mbps. With oversubscription, a 1 Gbps circuit can only support a limited number of high-speed subscribers.
- Business customers need guaranteed throughput. SLA-backed circuits need headroom to absorb bursts without violating commitments.
- You are adding a second or third sector. More radios mean more aggregate demand at the tower.
- Latency and jitter complaints increase. Congested backhaul shows up as inconsistent performance even when speed tests look okay.
The oversubscription math
WISPs oversubscribe backhaul because not every subscriber uses full bandwidth at once. A common starting point is 10:1 to 20:1 for residential customers. On a 1 Gbps circuit:
- At 10:1, you can support roughly 100 subscribers on 100 Mbps plans.
- At 20:1, you can support roughly 200 subscribers on 100 Mbps plans.
Those numbers assume residential usage patterns. Business customers, gamers, and streamers lower the effective oversubscription ratio. If your mix shifts toward heavier users, 1 Gbps runs out faster than the headline numbers suggest.
Cost considerations
10 Gbps circuits cost more than 1 Gbps, but the cost per Mbps usually drops significantly. Before upgrading, ask:
- Does my router and switch support 10 Gbps?
- Do I need new optics or SFP+ modules?
- What is the contract term and early-upgrade penalty?
- Can I get a 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps intermediate step?
